Melton Mowbray Town Estate Annual Meeting 6 October 2008

8 pm at Melton Baptist Church, Leicester Road

As residents within the Area of Benefit, we are individuals with different points of view and a wealth of experience who share a common desire to help improve the Town Estate which we are very proud of.

Want to retain all that’s excellent in the Town Estate but we also want to help bring about improvements and change in consultation with local people.

We will bring new ideas but we will listen to the views of local people – the Town Estate belongs to us all.

We are all different but we are all committed to transparency, consultation, helping and working in a co-operative way as feoffees.

Questions to which the Senior Townwarden has tried many times to obtain answers, without success.

  • Why is there no genuine Child Protection Policy after Charity Commission advice on 25 April 2008 that ‘all charities which have contact with vulnerable beneficiaries such as children should have a child protection policy in place’. Existing grounds staff can not legally be compelled to undergo CRB checking, but can be invited to do so but were not so invited . This usually happens elsewhere and is what I suggested, as a start, along with CRB checking of feoffees which would then encourage the grounds staff.

  • Why does the Chairman allow Town Estate records to show that the new Town Estate policy entitled ‘Protection of Young Persons’ is a Child Protection Policy when clearly it is a Health & Safety policy for the protection of younger staff and not vulnerable children ?

  • Why do Chairman Ken Saunders and other feoffees apparently think it acceptable that Sue Gowans and I are verbally abused at meetings. I have been called ‘Brainless and unintelligent’ by Dr Bruce Williamson.I have been shouted at to ‘SHUD UP ! SHUD UP! SHUD UP!’ about twelve timesby John Southerington who then approached me with clenched fists as though about to strike me.

When Sue Gowans mentioned the 1847 Police Clauses Act and ‘Thronging in the streets’ John Southerington laughed, saying ‘F…..g in the streets, F…..g in the streets. Ha Ha!’ . The latter was part of the Court evidence, and was never denied. After the Town Estate lost the Court Case Sue Gowans was accused by the Chairman of ‘rolling over’ the Town Estate.

  • Why are most feoffees not concerned that John Southerington removed the Big Appeal files from the office and refused to allow other feoffees to see records of donations, money expended and contracts – all information to which feoffees are entitled. All this despite knowing of John Southerington’s previous gross mismanagement of the Town Estate.  Especially when one contract he had already signed without the knowledge of the Town Estate solicitor, was rewritten by the Town Estate solicitor after I described it as nonsense?

  • Why am I and other feoffees not allowed access to the Register of Interests and so do not know which businesses, and societies, secret or otherwise, to which feoffees belong.

  • Why are there no Standing Orders, Equalities Policy or Code of Conduct to ensure meetings are properly conducted and all feoffees are fairly treated ? Why is there no training scheme for feoffees ?
